Today’s Reflection: Sunsets fill me with awe and hope for tomorrow. Sometimes sunsets make me sad because I think that I am now at the sunset of my life, not knowing what tomorrow may bring. Other times they make me joyful because a red sky usually promises the dawning of a beautiful next day. — Nerina Murray

Today’s Reflection: I have come to think that care of the soul requires a high degree of resistance to the culture around us, simply because that culture is dedicated to values that have no concern for the soul. — Thomas Merton,  American monk, theologian, writer, social activist. (1915-1968)

Today’s Reflection: A Prayer for All Who Serve

As we serve others we are working on ourselves.
Every act, every word, every gesture of genuine compassion naturally
nourishes our own hearts as well.

It is not a question of who is healed first.
When we attend to ourselves with compassion and mercy,
more healing is made available for others.

And when we serve others with an open and generous heart,
great healing comes to us. —Mahatma Gandhi

Today’s Reflection: The Fast Life

Fast from judging others; Feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from fear of illness; Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute; Feast on speech that purifies.
Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; Feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; Feast on hope.
Fast from negatives; Feast on encouragement.
Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion; Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip; Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from anxiety; Feast on faith. —Author unknown

Today’s Reflection: Serenity Prayer (full version)

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world

as it is, not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right

if I surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with Him

Forever in the next.

Amen. — Serenity Prayer, by Reinhold Niebuhr

Today’s Reflection: O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work, help me to remember the jobless;
When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home;
When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer,
And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency;
Bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.
Amen.  —Samuel F. Pugh
