Today’s Reflection: A Cook’s Advent Prayer

What joy this brings me, Lord.  Thank you for guiding me into the kitchen for some time of silence with you.  The room fills with wonderful smells and I share tastes and samples with my family as they make extra trips through the kitchen on days like this.  Thank you for each and every one of these special people in my family.  They are like the ingredients of my own life, adding spice and heat and wonderful flavor and melding together into a unique dish designed to glorify you.

You know, God, cooking is quite a bit like my life.  It’s messy, I get careless and sometimes things don’t turn out as I had planned.  But in the mess of my life, that’s where I can turn to you.  Help me when I have to deal with being so imperfect.  Bless me with humility when I grapple with my own poverty.  Let me feel how deeply you love me, even when all I have to offer is scorched and humble.

Be with me Lord, in this kitchen today.  Help me to take the time in this intimate silence with you, to pray for each person who will eat this food.  Allow me to remember all of those around the world who have so little food, and bless those who share what little they have. — Creighton University Online Ministries

Today’s  Reflection: Prayer

Lord,
May I see you in the pleading gaze of the poor.
May I hear your voice in the plaintive cry of your children in need.
Give me the courage to smile, to say a word of greeting, a word of encouragement.
Give me the generosity to share food with the hungry and clothes with the naked.
Far be it from me to speak badly of my sisters and brothers who are suffering.
Far be it from me to trample on their rights or to turn them away.
For the poor are your favorite disguise.
Amen. — Fr. Paul Kalenzi, SJ

Today’s Reflection: The name of Jesus is light, and food, and medicine. It is light, when it is preached to us; it is food, when we think upon it; it is the medicine that soothes our pains when we invoke it. — St. Bernard of Clairvaux.

Today’s Reflection: Take five minutes today to go outside and just sit still. Listen to the sounds you hear… maybe you’ll just hear cars, lawnmowers and radios… try to hear the sounds underneath that surface noise, the sound of the wind in the trees, birds singing and animals buzzing… take a moment to remind yourself about your connection to the earth and to all living things… how the trees will inhale our air and make it clean and healthy… how the rain will provide us with water and help to grow the food that sustains us…take a moment to be grateful for the air you breathe, the beauty that surrounds you and the earth that provides us with nourishment and life… — Unattributed.
